Winners: Schools honoured at annual education awards

Hundreds of pupils, teachers and parents attended the 2016 East Lancashire Newspapers' Education Awards prize evening.

And once again Burnley College’s impressive campus site proved a perfect venue.

Burnley’s Blessed Trinity RC College was named Secondary School of the Year and Salterforth Primary School picked up the junior crown.

East Lancashire Newspapers’ group editor Chris Daggett said: “It is so heartening to hear the many positive stories and successes this evening.

“We have a great deal to be proud of in our local schools and the stories outlined give us great hope for the future.

AWARDS: Primary School pupil of the year: Winner: Owen Sharples, Whittlefield Primary School: Runners-up: Paige Knowles, Padiham Primary School;Olivia Swift, St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School.

Secondary school pupil of the year: Winner: Kelsey Hewitt, Shuttleworth College. Runners-up: Emily Speirs, Blessed Trinity RC College; Sulayman Tabassum, Sir John Thursby Community College.

Sustainable School of the year: Winner: Sir John Thursby Community College. Runner-up: West Street Community Primary School.

Inspirational teaching award: Winner: Janet Ennis, Padiham Green C of E Primary School. Runners-up: Richard Varey, Blessed Trinity RC College; Liselore Woltering, Ss John Fisher & Thomas More RC High School; Catherine Doney, Holy Trinity RC Primary School.

Sport achievement award: Winner: Padiham Primary School Girls’ football team: Runner-up: Kayla Cookson, Pleckgate High School.

Career aspiration award: Winner: Sir John Thursby Community College. Runners-up: Blessed Trinity RC College; St John’s C of E Primary School.
