Well-known Pendle cyclist seriously injured in fatal collision

Clive McAfee (61) of Emmott Lane, Laneshaw Bridge, was seriously injured in the accident which occurred at 10-40am on Sunday in the Settle area, and had to be airlifted to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The motorcyclist also involved in the accident, a 36-year-old man from Rochdale, sadly died at Leeds General Infirmary.

Police have revealed that Mr McAfee and the motorcyclist were travelling in the same direction from Wigglesworth towards Rathmell, with the collision occurring as the motorcycle approached from behind.

Mr McAfee's family issued an emotional statement following the accident.

It read: "Clive is an accomplished cyclist who cycles hundreds of miles every week and has cycled in many countries across the world. It is his greatest passion in the world.

"Yesterday (Sunday) Clive set off like any normal day and then for us that turned in to a nightmare. At 10-39am he was in collision with a motorcyclist and was airlifted to Preston Royal Infirmary.

"We are very lucky to still have Clive, wonderful father to Laura and Robert and wife to Janet here with us today. Had he not been wearing his helmet he may not have been.

"He has suffered fractures to his spine and neck and a collapsed lung. Of course, knowing the long term effects will take time. At this stage, he is awaiting an operation to stabilise his spine, which will probably take place tomorrow.

"A retired nurse, he is one of the most caring people you could meet. Someone must have been looking out for him yesterday.

"We would like to offer our condolences to the motorcyclist rider, who sadly lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

The road re-opened at 2-50pm following the accident after the police completed a collision scene investigation.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward, as well as anyone who recalls seeing the manner of riding of either vehicle prior to the collision.

They also wish to thank the members of the public who stopped at the scene and assisted in administering first aid.
