Snow set to fall in East Lancashire as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

A yellow weather warning has been issued for East Lancashire with up to 15cm of snow predicted to fall.

The weather warning means snow accumulations of 2-5cm are likely, with as much as 10-15cm possible in areas where snowfall is prolonged.

Ice will also likely develop across the region in the coming days, causing treacherous conditions in places.

The warning, which covers the east of the county, including Rossendale, Burnley and Ribble Valley, came into force at 12am this morning (February 8) and will last until 11.59pm tomorrow (Wednesday, February 9).

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Snow showers will feed off the North Sea into many northern and eastern areas of the UK. Whilst some areas in the warning area will remain largely dry, some persistent bands of showers are likely to develop in places.

"Daily accumulations of 2-5 cm are probable for some, with 10-15 cm plausible in areas where showers merge into more organised and prolonged spells of snow.

"Some icy stretches are possible overnight, mainly where melting snow during the afternoon has not a chance to dry out before freezing overnight, although snow is likely to be more prevalent."

- Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Small chance of longer travel delays in places with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

- Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

- Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

- There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off

- There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

A frosty start, icy for some, with snow in places. Patchy cloud will bring further snow showers to much of the region. More snow in eastern areas, drier in the west. Strong winds throughout and feeling bitterly cold. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Tonight (February 8):

This evening and tonight, snow showers will continue, especially further east. Continued dry spells throughout the night, remaining windy. Feeling very cold, with ice and frost developing. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Tuesday (February 9):

Patchy cloud, with snow showers continuing throughout tomorrow, with intermittent dry spells. Heavier snow likely in easternmost areas. Strong winds, especially along coasts. Feeling very cold. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday (February 10 - February 12):

Continued mixture of sunny spells and snow showers on Wednesday. Showers ease on Thursday, remaining very cold with brisk winds. Slightly milder Friday, with rain, hill snow and dry spells.
