A 37-year-old man died in the early hours of this morning after being found lying in a Burnley road with a suspected head injury last night.
Detectives have now launched an investigation following the incident in Lyndhurst Road, near the Money Save store, around 7-40pm last night. The man, who has been named locally as Andrew Hayes, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he died around 3am this morning.
Owner of Money Save Muhammad Saad (24) said the incident was captured on his store’s CCTV camera, and that the victim was a regular customer in his shop.
He added: “He had a can in his hand and was stood in front of the door and a man came and punched him, and he fell down. The man ran away [towards Brunshaw Avenue].
“I saw somebody running on the CCTV and heard a noise and I went out and he was on the floor. The police came.
“I thought maybe he had fallen. When I went inside and saw the CCTV, I saw somebody had punched him and run away.
“He got up and he said he didn’t want to get in the ambulance. He got taken to hospital, and he passed away this morning.
“I gave the police CCTV. The man [who ran away] was wearing a green hoodie and a black baseball cap.”
A customer in the shop added: “He [the victim] was a quiet lad - he kept himself to himself.”
Det. Chief Insp. Pete Simm from the Force Major Investigation Team said: “This investigation is very much in its early stages and we are trying to determine how this man has come about this serious head injury.
“We have officers making inquiries in the area, including locating any CCTV that may capture the man’s last movements.
“I would appeal for anyone who can help us piece together what may have happened to get in touch.”
