Paintings, ceramics, jewellery and even garden ornaments came under their gaze.

The trip to Towneley was like being on home ground for antiques expert and roadshow valuer Eric Knowles, from Nelson, but it was host Fiona Bruce’s first visit.

“It is beautiful and the fact it’s publicly owned is amazing,” she said. “The grounds are so well kept and it is a real oasis in a beautiful part of the world.”
