Mindless vandals have damaged a pair of Victorian-style lamp-posts in a Burnley park.

The vandalism occurred overnight on Saturday when the tops of two lamp-posts were smashed in Ightenhill Park.

The lamp-posts had only been installed a few years ago, paid for by the Friends of Ightenhill Park group.

Ward Coun. Ida Carmichael said: "It is really disappointing to see what has been done. The lamp-posts haven't been in the park for that many years, and everyone thinks they have been a nice addition.

"They have certainly helped people to feel safe walking through the park at night. Sadly, the power has now had to be turned off and so we have no light in the park at the moment. We are working to get them repaired out of our own funds."

Coun. Carmichael said she hoped the lamp-posts could be repaired in time for the forthcoming Ightenhill Park Festival, which this year will be held on July 15th.

The annual festival will this year feature a classic rock covers band, Freebird, as well as the usual stalls and attractions including archery, a bouncy castle, and children's rides.

It starts at noon and runs until 4pm.
