Urgent weather warning over 80mph gusts

North West Ambulance Service is urging people to take extra care after the Met Office issued a warning of exceptionally windy weather.

It said wind gusts of 60mph were expected with gusts of 70mph probable across parts, particularly Northern areas, and some exposed areas may see gusts as high as 80mph.

The ambulance service is prepared for an increase in 999 calls but says many of these could be avoided.

A spokesman for NWAS said: “We are urging people to take extra care and look after vulnerable neighbours and relatives today. Accidents in blustery conditions can largely be avoided when sensible precautions are taken.

“Avoid unnecessary walking, especially on high ground. If you do have to go out make sure you’re wrapped up well and have the correct footwear.

“Elderly people are the most vulnerable in severe weather so offer to do essential shopping for neighbours and family members.”

Winds will start to ease by evening.
