Sgt Tracey Ward, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “This collision has left a teenager with a serious injury and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 0174 of February 11th.

It is believed the boy had just bought a box of cereal from a corner shop when he was involved in a collision with a blue Mazda 3.

Ann Walsh and Crystal Pool, who work in the nearby Dainty sandwich shop, rushed to help.

Ann said: “I was just serving a customer when someone said a young lad had been knocked down.

“We ran out and another local shopkeeper was there trying to comfort him. He wasn’t talking but he was groaning.

“The emergency services came very quickly and the air ambulance landed in the field nearby.

“I think the lad lives just round the corner. You could still see the box of cereals in the road. I just hope he’s okay.”
