UPDATED: Police appeal for witnesses after serious collision

Police are appealing for information after five people, including an eight-year-old boy, were seriously injured in a rush-hour horror smash yesterday.

It is believed that a silver Mercedes car been involved in a collision with a red Transit van on the A59 Skipton Road at Kelbrook near to the Old Stone Trough.

The road was closed for four hours while the emergency services cut passengers out of the vehicles, and police commenced an investigation at the scene.

The passenger from the Transit van, a 29-year-old woman from Nelson, suffered two fractured vertebrae while the driver, a 26-year-old man from Skipton suffered a broken collar bone, bruising and cuts. They were both taken to Royal Preston Hospital

The driver of the Mercedes, a 69-year-old woman from Barnoldswick, was also taken to Royal Preston while the passenger, a 68-year-old man from Barnoldswick, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with several fractures including leg, ankle, pelvis, sternum, ribs and shoulder.

An eight-year-old boy, who was in the Mercedes, was taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital with broken legs. A dog was also injured.

Sgt Claire Pearson, from the East Road Policing Unit, said: “If anyone has seen any of these vehicles travelling in the lead up to the collision, or indeed they witnessed the collision itself, please get in touch with us.”
