The white domestic rats were dumped next to a stone wall on Brogden Lane opposite a bench.

RSPCA officer Natalie Taylor, who had been visiting the site twice daily to search for the rodents, was able to catch half of them in humane traps and believes they had been living in a nearby wall.

“The rats seem to have some sort of genetic condition and this may be the reason someone dumped them,” said Natalie Taylor.
