Pendleside Hospice's Sunflower Appeal set to go ahead with a difference

Despite the outbreak of the coronavirus, this year's Sunflower Memories Appeal for Pendleside Hospice is still going ahead but with a twist.

The appeal, which involves people donating a minimum of £5 in return for a planted sunflower and plaque baring a handwritten name, is a touching way to pay tribute to a loved one who has passed away. Planted in the hospice gardens, the flowers create a colourful display of remembrance ready for the Celebration of Life service on May 30th.

However, with this year's service unable to go ahead with people in attendance due to Covid-19, the event will be recorded and streamed on Pendleside Hospice's Facebook page on the 30th at 2pm. The service will include readings and an original song written by Family Support counsellor Ken Mitchell and performed alongside fundraiser Leah Hutchinson.

“The Sunflower Memories Appeal has always signified that summer is on its way and brings joy to a lot of people," said Head of Events Sammi Graham. “We are determined not to let this year’s circumstances overshadow those who want to remember their loved ones in this way, whether they have a connection to the hospice or not.

"Anyone can get involved by remembering a loved one who is no longer with us," Sammi added, with a list of all those remembered set to feature on Pendleside’s website and Facebook page.

Last year, the appeal - sponsored by Alderson and Horan Funeral Services - raised a grand total of £10,000 for the hospice. This year, children are being encouraged to get involved and draw their own sunflowers to share with the hospice on social media using the hashtag #SunflowerMemoriesAppeal.

To donate, either visit pendleside.org.uk/sunflower-memories-appeal-2020-form or payments can be taken by Sammi Graham on 01282 440 128.
