Tributes paid to St Helens man killed in road crash

Tributes have been paid to Shane Maughan, 20, who has died following a car crash

A man from St Helens who died in a car crash has been described as “too perfect for this world”.

Shane Maughan, 20, was driving a silver Ford Mondeo which collided with a black taxi on Manchester Road at about 1am on Saturday (November 7th).

He sustained fatal injuries and sadly died at the scene, in spite of efforts by police officers to save his life. HM Coroner has been informed.

The driver of the taxi, a 48 year old man, sustained serious injuries to his chest and legs and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital. The two passengers in the taxi, two women aged 58 and 38, also received head injuries. They were all from the Burnley area and are now recovering.

Tributes to Shane, who hails from the well-known St Helens travelling family, have been paid on social media.

Eileen Price Maughan wrote: “Shane the Barr, God took you back Shane, He knew you were too perfect for this world, you’ll be the most handsome angel in heaven.

“I’ll miss our chats and coffee.”

Shanice Roger said: “RIP handsome, you’ll be in your dad’s arms now looking down on the rest of the family. RIP angel, gone but never ever to be forgotten.”

Nellie-Gail Price added: “RIP Shane you were a lovely person and a great laugh. Go now and sleep with the angels you will be so missed. God bless you and all your family.”

Deano Price wrote: “RIP Shane u are the number one.”

Rachel Gilby said: “RIP God bless you and take you under his loving wings.”

A Toyota Yaris, which was parked and unattended at the time, was also damaged in the collision.

Sgt Malcolm Bell from the Road Policing Unit said: “This was a tragic incident which has cost a young man his life and my thoughts remain with his family and friends. Our investigations are continuing and I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact us. I am especially keen to speak to any drivers who may have been stationary in their vehicles at the traffic lights on Manchester Road and who saw the Mondeo.”

The case has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as a matter of routine after the Mondeo was spotted by a police officer on Rossendale Road prior to the collision. There was no pursuit.
