Tributes to gran killed in mobility scooter smash

Touching tributes have been paid to a “wonderful” mum-of-11 who has died following an accident while riding her disability scooter.

Burnley pensioner and grandmother-of-16 Mrs Dorothy Kenny (71) died in hospital on Tuesday morning.

She was involved in an accident around 1pm last Friday, when crossing Manchester Road on her mobility scooter she collided with a beige Fiat Panda at the junction with Gainsborough Avenue.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Mrs Kenny moved to England when she was 12. She met her husband of 50 years, Terrance, in London and the couple settled in Burnley in 1972.

Mr Kenny said: “She was a wonderful person to be around and she was very funny. She wa s a great mum and will be missed by the whole family.”

Described by her family as a keen painter she also loved the music of Daniel O’Donnell, as well as writing poetry.

Mrs Kenny was also a regular worshipper at St Mary’s RC Church in Burnley.

An intelligent and caring woman, Mrs Kenny trained as a nurse as well as completing two degrees and several A-Levels at Burnley College while raising her large family.

Following the accident, Mrs Kenny received a serious injury to her leg and head and was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital.

A funeral date has still to be set.
