Around a dozen caravans pitched up overnight on Monday in Towneley Park, the "jewel in Burnley's crown", much to the dismay of local residents and politicians.

It has now emerged that the travellers are making their way to the traditional Appleby Horse Fair, which starts on Thursday in Cumbria.

Burnley Borough Council confirmed its officers had spoken to the travellers and provided bins for them to use to collect rubbish and keep the site tidy.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: “Council officers have been to speak to the travellers and a notice to leave has been issued to them. The travellers said they will be moving on in the next few days to travel to Appleby Fair.

“We will apply to the court at the earliest opportunity for a possession order to remove the travellers from the site. We’re liaising with the police and we will both continue to closely monitor the situation.

“We have asked the travellers to keep the site as clean and tidy as possible and ensure that when they leave any debris is removed. Any complaints of anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police.”
