Travellers move off Burnley car park before court papers served

TRAVELLERS who set up camp between two popular Burnley parks have moved on.

Six caravans arrived at the car park next to Thompson Park in Queen Victoria Road last Wednesday.

A further three caravans were spotted earlier this week on the car park which is located near the Brewers Fayre restaurant and Queen’s Park and Bank Hall park.

Burnley Borough Council were preparing court papers to see the travellers moved on but before the order could be served on them this Wednesday the group left the site.

A council spokesman confirmed that it was the same group that had earlier set up camp on the Prairie playing fields car park.

The council sought to enforce a similar order before they moved on at the last minute.

Andrew Leah, property services manager for Burnley Borough Council, said: “The council were aware of the travellers at the Queen Victoria Car Park, which is council owned land.

“The appropriate court action to remove them was taken, and we served notice of a court hearing to them on Friday. The hearing was cancelled this morning when it became clear that the travellers had moved off the car park.”
