Work began in early November on a 12-month project to widen the junction of Accrington Road, Rosegrove Lane and Rossendale Road close to junction 9 of the M65 to manage traffic congestion as the area grows.

Despite Covid-19 causing significant disruption to highway work across the country, work on the Accrington Road scheme has been able to carry on.

Simon Bucknell, Lancashire County Council highways operations manager, said: "The majority of work needed to widen the Rose Grove junction involves moving a large number of services and utilities to allow the highway improvements to take place, and this work has continued over recent weeks.

"The services include major fibre communication and broadband cables, gas, water and electricity pipes, and the work to reroute them is still on schedule. Work has already been completed to move broadband cables, and work is ongoing to move gas pipes and electricity cables.

"Our highway staff have completed the majority of earthworks needed to widen Accrington Road, and the next phase will involve building a retaining structure before utilities can be diverted into the new road cutting.

"All but safety critical highway work such as pothole repairs was suspended at the start of the lockdown but we are currently reviewing this with a view to shortly resuming some other essential work with social distancing measures in place."
