Road closure update as work continues to repair major gas leak

Repairs to a major gas leak which forced the closure of a main road in Padiham and Hapton are continuing today.

Cadent, the company responsible for the area's gas supply, said its engineers were working throught he night to fix the leak on Manchester Road in Padiham.

A closure was put in place from the junction of Manchester Road/East Street/Simpson Street, Hapton, to the junction of Manchester Road/Lancaster Drive, Padiham.

A Cadent spokesman said: "Our teams worked through the night and we’ll be on site through today – for as long as it takes – as we carry on what is a challenging job to fix this leak.

"We’ve explained to people living in the local area that while gas is escaping from one of our mains, our team on site has everything in hand, and they needn’t worry.

"To work on a gas main like this, we need to carefully manage gas pressures, and also take into account that there are electricity cables overhead. So, it’s a complex job, but we have everything in hand.

"The road closure, which was put in place by the emergency services to keep everyone safe, is likely to be in place at least through today. We really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding."
