The Lancashire border is around 100 miles from Filey, meaning the minimum distance for the round trip would have been around 200 miles.

Sgt Paul Cording, from the North Yorkshire Roads Policing Group, said: "This vehicle stopped along with my North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group colleague near Malton.

"Apparently the driver was on his way back to Lancashire from Filey having been there metal detecting on the beach.

"Not an essential journey under the current Covid-19 guidelines, so reported."
