East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor was told there were no witnesses to the incident, but a search of Mr Boal’s house had revealed a suicide note.

Mr Taylor said: “I have been told by Mr Boal’s GP that he suffered from depression. His family live in Northern Ireland and have been unable to shed any light on his current mood.

“There were no witnesses or CCTV footage of the incident. However, given where he was on the viaduct and taking into account the note that was found I have little option but to return a conclusion of suicide.

“I offer my deepest sympathies to his family.”
