A BURNLEY truck maintenance and service depot is to close.
Bosses at Ryder Transportation and Logistics Solutions Worldwide, which has a base in Phoenix Way on Smallshaw industrial estate, off Accrington Road, have decided the depot, and a second base in Derby, are “not economically viable”.
The company has not given a date for closure, but has said it will be within the next three months.
Bosses have said they are in consultation with employees, and hope to transfer the depot’s eight workers to other roles within the business, where possible.
Last year, Ryder acquired rival truck rental firm Hill Hire from Lloyds Bank, at a cost of £154m. but the company said the deal was not behind the decision to close the Burnley and Derby sites. A statement from the firm said: “As part of a detailed review of its combined business operations, Ryder has made the decision to cease operations at two of its locations, Burnley and Derby. These will close during the first quarter of 2012.
“These closures are regrettable, but having reviewed current business levels for these locations and their market catchments and their cost base, Ryder has concluded that they are not economically viable in the longer term.
“Our existing contract hire customers at these locations have been contacted with regard to providing alternative vehicle maintenance and servicing services.
“These closures are not part of Ryder’s integration plan for Hill Hire, but are an unfortunate business necessity, to maintain a viable economic level of overhead for each of our locations.”
Ryder has sites across the country for rental, contract hire and maintenance of trucks and trailers.
