Having already begun conversations with the Department for Transport on improving the frequency of services between Burnley and Manchester, Mr Higginbotham is keen to join up the case for better connections with improving the physical station infrastructure, too.

In asking for the Chancellor to confirm whether extra funding would be available to support this, Mr Higginbotham highlighted the need for Manchester Road station to have a bridge connecting the two platforms which would provide for a more accessible route.

Mr Higginbotham said: “Rail links will be essential to re-energising the economy once we exit this very difficult period which is why I am committed to having these conversations early on.

"The current route between the platforms is not great, particularly for those who have disabilities or limited mobility, and now is the time to change that.

"I am pleased that the Chancellor has already discussed Manchester Road station with the Transport Secretary and I look forward to following-up on those conversations so that real progress can be made.”
