A Burnley couple are lucky to be alive after their car flipped over several times in a serious accident on the first day of their holiday in Turkey.

Eric (65) and Eileen Speakman (66), of Coleshill Avenue, Brunshaw, had to be treated in intensive care for two days following the smash which occurred while they were travelling to their holiday apartment in Side, south-west Turkey, from the airport.

The couple ran Eileen’s off-licence in Padiham for 12 years. Their son Mick, who has flown out to the country, said: “My parents have a holiday home in Side which they visit regularly. The accident they were involved in was very nasty. It happened on the way to their apartment from the airport last Tuesday night.

“They were trying to avoid a motorbike pulling out into the road unexpectedly which caused the car to flip over four or five times. Mum and dad suffered quite serious injuries and were treated at Anatolia Hospital. Dad has a broken wrist and ribs, as well as a damaged knee. Mum also has broken ribs and wrist as well as her vertebrae and a punctured lung. Mum has taken a few steps and is on the road to recovery but will be in hospital for a while. Dad was discharged on Saturday.”

Mick’s sister Cathy Fulton also travelled to Turkey last week to be with their parents.
