THE driver of a car involved in an accident may have fallen ill at the wheel according to the police.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the serious road traffic collision in Brierfield on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place in Colne Road opposite Connelly’s Chippy at 4-45 p.m. when a red Volkswagen Polo, driven by a 79-year-old man, travelling in the direction of Brierfield town centre, collided with a red Mitsubishi Colt driven by a 54-year-old Nelson woman travelling in the opposite direction.
Police are investigating the possibility that the man had fallen ill at the wheel. He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital where he is in a stable condition.
The woman was also taken to hospital where she was treated for suspected back injuries.
Police closed the road at Halifax Road and Clitheroe Road to allow for an investigation and recovery of the vehicles. A third car, a black Ford Focus parked on the road was also damaged.
PC Michael Baker from Pennine Road Policing Unit said: “I would appeal to anybody that witnessed the collision that haven’t yet spoken with police to come forward and call us on 01282 425001.”
