Transport police hunt Nelson train yobs

Officers from British Transport Police have launched the search for people responsible for damaging a train in Nelson on Saturday.

The incident happened as the train, the 8-44 a.m. Blackpool South to Colne service, travelled through the Chaffers crossing at Barkerhouse Road, Nelson.

As the train made its way through the crossing a brick was thrown at the rear cab window, smashing it.

PC John Phillips, investigating for BTP, said: “I cannot overstate just how dangerous this type of behaviour is.

“Thankfully there was no-one in the rear cab at the time; if there had been we could have been looking at an incident resulting in serious injuries or even a fatality.

“Any object when thrown at a train has the potential to become a lethal weapon due to the speeds involved and the exacerbating factor of splintered glass.”

He added: “It is vital we trace those responsible before someone is seriously injured.

“Clearly the culprits feel it is acceptable- and possibly fun – to throw objects at trains. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

“BTP takes a dim view of anyone who endangers the safety of others and we will do everything we can to trace the offenders and put them before the courts.”
