Traffic chaos on motorway network

DRIVERS intending a journey north on the M6 today are advised the motorway is closed between junctions 30 and 31 south east of Preston due to an incident involving a petrol tanker which has shed its load across the carriageway.

And the M65 westbound between Junctions and 2 and 1 remains shut following this morning’s fatal accident involving a car and a motorcycle.

Both these inicidents continue to impact on the M61. Drivers are unable to leave the M61 to join the northbound M6 or westbound M65.

Highways Agency Traffic Officers from Samlesbury are currently assisting the emergency services at both incidents; Lancashire Police is still on the scene of the M65 incident conducting an accident investigation.

The Highways Agency’s Regional Control Centre at Newton-le-Willows and the National Traffic Operations Centre at Birmingham (formerly the National Traffic Control Centre, NTCC) have set electronic signs across the local, regional and national motorway network advising drivers of the closures.

Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area if possible and plan their journey carefully - including those intending to use the northbound M61 - and seek alternative routes north.

Anyone seeking live traffic information can visit www.highways.gov.uk or - where it is safe to do so - ring the Highways Agency’s Information Line on 0300 123 5000.
