Traffic chaos as lorry overturns at M65 junction

A LORRY has again overturned on the motorway roundabout at the bottom of Reedyford Road, Nelson, causing rush hour chaos this morning.

It is at least the third time this has happened and the police have suggested the state of the roundabout may have to be investigated by Lancashire County Council to find out if there is a problem for large lorries. The driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt, but it was carrying tons of refuse and it was scattered over the road, causing major problems.

Lancashire County Council, Pendle Council and the Nelson-based recycling firm Norpol helped by sending teams and vehicles to clear up. PC Richard Kemp, of the Road Policing Unit at Colne, said: “I would like to thank the councils and Norpol for their help.”

When the lorry overturned as it was going round the roundabout in Scotland Road, it ended up blocking the down side of Reedyford Road with plastic bottles, cans and some rather smellier rubbish. It took out both a lamp-post and a directions sign when it keeled over. But it was quickly established there were no injuries.

Police had to direct traffic up Reedyford Road after Scotland Road had to be blocked while they got the lorry back on its wheels.
