New Burnley roundabout layout driving motorists round the bend

The A679 roundabout travelling from Asda to B and M was reconfigured by highways engineers earlier this year when traffic lights were installed.

But the “confusing” layout of lanes approaching the roundabout has generated huge debate on social media in Burnley with many motorists claiming they do not know which lane to take.

The right hand lane is the correct lane for motorists to use when turning towards B and M, while the left lane should be used to turn to Halfords and straight towards the Town Mouse pub and car parks.

However, a post on the Burnley Lancashire Now and Then Facebook page has attracted hundreds of comments and split debate on the issue.

One comment read: “I used this roundabout three times this weekend and every time coming from ASDA cars were in the wrong lane. Read the signs please - there will be an accident soon!”

Other motorists have argued that the roundabout isn’t big enough for the lane changes, while others have said the lanes do not flow smoothly through the next set of lights.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “These improvements are part of a wider programme being undertaken in East Lancashire to support growth on our highway network, reduce congestion and will enable future commercial development.

“The improvements on Active Way also improve the sustainable pedestrian and cycling links into the town centre and the local college.

“We’d ask people to take particular care in this area due to the new road layouts, and are currently reviewing whether we could make any improvements to help people negotiate these busy junctions.”
