The vintage Scarlett Tea Rooms is one of 16 businesses raising a cuppa this month after receiving the highest food hygiene rating of five.

Carol Kerr, who runs the Accrington Road tea rooms together with her sister Noreen Brogna, said: “We received the news of our top score the day after opening and we were absolutely thrilled with it and the feedback.

“We pride ourselves on delivering a good service and this obviously involves compliance with food hygiene regulations. As a newly opened business, we are so proud that our hard work and commitment to maintaining high standards has been recognised in our top food hygiene rating.”

Other businesses at the top of the class this month are The Food Booth, Illuminati, Brook House, J & T Clarke Ltd, Athena’s Bistro, Briercliffe Education Centre (Nursery), The Town Mouse, Ashmeade HFE, J Conlan, KFC in Colne Rd, Law Wood, Planet Pizza, W Boyes & Co Ltd, Bank Hall Care Home, and Spring Cottages.

Coun. John Harbour, the council’s Executive member for environmental health, said: “The food hygiene rating scheme plays an essential role in the council’s work to protect consumers and improve standards in the food industry. It has been designed to make sure that the ratings given to businesses are fair. It rewards those businesses that are achieving high standards and also helps to raise standards in those that require improvement.

“The environmental health team works hard to help new and existing businesses achieve high ratings. This helps businesses succeed by offering customers reassurance that the food on offer there is safe.

“I would like to congratulate all the businesses that have been awarded the top rating and encourage people to check the rating online in advance or look out for the distinctive green and black food hygiene rating stickers and certificates when visiting premises.”
