‘Too late’ to get tip re-opened in Padiham

THE fight to re-open Padiham’s recycling centre looks all but lost.

Lancashire County Council closed the Park Road site as part of a county-wide cost-cutting exercise to save £1m. a year. Padiham was one of 23 sites to come under review and county councillors decided the cost of operating two facilities, one in Burnley and one in Padiham, was significantly higher than for districts which had just one. In March, four more recycling plants were shut down in the county and the county council has since launched a review to find out what people think about the closures.

Padiham town councillors wanted to use this review to launch a campaign to reinstate the centre but Coun. Andy Tatchell told members at their monthly meeitng this week he felt it would be a waste of time, saying: “This is not a consultation period and we know from experience the county council did not listen to us or take our views into account during the consultation period. It smacks of moving deckchairs around on the Titanic.”

Town clerk Mrs Elizabeth Bolton had contacted the parish councils in Read, Simonstone and Sabden for their support but each council has stated they want to know more about the next phase of closures and how it would affect their areas.

Coun. John Harbour said: “We should have been actively seeking their support when the Padiham closure was announced, it is too late now.”
