Time to sign up for Race For Life 2011

Some women from across the borough have already signed up for the fund-raisers, which will both be held on Sunday, May 15th, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

But there are plenty more places left with events planned for 11 a.m. and 2-30 p.m. and organisers are encouraging 3,560 women to put their best feet forward to raise £189,000.

Women of all ages are being urged to walk, run or jog the 5km course around the park as a tribute to those who have died from cancer and raise funds for research into the disease.

Some of the women who took part in Race for Life are cancer survivors, while others take part to celebrate or remember the lives of family, friends or loved ones. Others are there simply to do something positive to raise money for the cause.

Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fund-raising event series where all the money raised goes to fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.

Every hour, around four people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West. When Race for Life started in 1994, many people diagnosed with cancer did not survive.

Since then, money generated by Race for Life has supported Cancer Research UK’s work and now more people are beating the disease than ever before.

Laura Taylor, Race for Life event manager, said: “Race for Life in Burnley is a unique celebration of sisterhood and pride. “The atmosphere is amazing, with local women from all walks of life coming together to make a positive difference to people affected by cancer.

“They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course with many simply walking round, chatting and having fun.

“In 2011, we hope more women than ever before will take part. We need our Race for Life regulars, as well as women who took part years ago, to join together with many new faces to help save more lives.”
