Time to get up and active in new scheme

A new service to encourage people to lose weight and live a more active and healthy lifestyle is being launched in Burnley.

The Up and Active healthy weight service has been commissioned by Lancashire County Council.

This service will focus on tackling obesity and encouraging people to manage their weight. It will also help them become more physically active.

Linda Searle, head of health and wellbeing, said: “Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of many chronic conditions including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, mental health problems and musculoskeletal conditions.

“The Up and Active team will support people to achieve the recommended activity levels of 30 minutes on at least five days a week.”

The service was launched at Barden track yesterday (Tuesday) at 6pm, which will coincide with the first week of a Couch to 5k run.

It also provides free weight management programmes tailored to suit people’s needs.

People will learn about the best approaches to weight loss and about the factors that have caused them to gain weight in the first place.

The service also features activities including health walks and community events, school activities, family workshops and after-school clubs, and community gardening.
