Teen pushed firework through door of Facebook friend after rejection

An “immature” teenager put a firework through the door of a Facebook friend when she rejected him, a court heard.

Nadeem Arif (19), of Barkerhouse Road, Nelson, had been upset because the victim had told him she did not want their relationship to go further. Arif then put the firework though her letterbox, scorching the floor, Burnley Crown Court was told.

He admitted attempted arson at Rylands Street, Burnley, last October 22nd.

His barrister, Mr Ahmed Nadim, who said Arif had “relatively low mental agility” and had been stupid, asked for pre-sentence and psychological reports. He added: “He needs some education in life rather than deprivation of his liberty.”

The defendant was bailed until April 15th on condition he lives at his home address and does not enter Burnley, except to see his solicitor or to attend court.

Judge Beverly Lunt said what the defendant had done was dangerous as he did not know who was behind the door and the firework could have landed on a child, dog or cat.

She told Arif: “All sentencing options, including custody, will have to be considered.”
