Teen in police chase through streets of Brierfield

Labourer Liam James Davison, a 19-year-old new dad, was driving in a built-up area and went through red lights in the pursuit in Halifax Road, Brierfield, on July 24th. He caused a grazed elbow to the officer when he tried to arrest him two weeks later, Pennine magistrates heard.

Davison, of Pinewood Drive, Nelson, has been ordered off the road for two years and must take an extended retest before he is allowed back behind the wheel. The defendant admitted dangerous driving and failing to stop for a constable on July 24th, and allegations of resisting police at Nelson on August 5th.

He was also given a community order, with 200 hours unpaid work and must pay £50 compensation and £85 costs.

The Bench told him he could have been a danger to other road users, but had not done anything like it before.

Mr NIck Cassidy (defending) said: “This was not one moment of madness. It appears to be two.”

The defendant, whose long-term partner had had a baby, had bought the car to sell it and make some money for his family.

Davison had thought he would be sent to prison, but the irony was if he had stopped he would have been asked to produce his documents and allowed to go on his way.

Mr Cassidy said driving in such a manner always carried a risk of harm to the public. The solicitor added: “He made a grave error of judgement.”
