The defendant, who had taken his cousin’s Volkswagen Passat, had failed his driving test twice. He agreed when questioned he could have killed somebody, but pointed out to police the roads had been almost deserted.

The defendant, of Springfield Road, Nelson, admitted aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, no insurance and no licence, on June 14th.

He was given 200 hours unpaid work. Rasoul was also banned for a year and must take an extended driving test.

Keith Harrison (prosecuting) said that at 5-54am, two police officers in a marked vehicle on Parliament Street, Burnley, saw a blue Passat being driven by the defendant.

They went alongside him at red traffic lights on Todmorden Road and as they did the vehicle set off through the red light.

Officers took up the chase through Belvedere Road, Ormerod Road, Church Street and into Duke Bar. A section of Colne Road, before the junction with Windermere and Eastern Avenue, was being resurfaced.

Mr Harrison added: “There were several raised ironworks on the road surface, posing significant risk and the defendant was travelling at 94mph in a 30mph area.”
