The Bobbin Cafe, which specialises in Portuguese fare, has opened in Oakmount Mill in Wiseman Street and co-owner and chef David O’Hara is hoping the Mediterranean flavours will prove a hit with customers.

David (39), who lives in Nelson with Portuguese wife Beatriz, learned to cook traditional dishes on a charcoal grill while living in the Algarve and said most of the menu at the Bobbin is cooked on the grill.

“When I left school I went into catering then I went into construction. I then moved out to Portugal and met a Portuguese family who had a restaurant. They taught me how to cook Portuguese dishes using the charcoal grill. My wife’s taught me a lot of it too, being Portuguese.”
