Simon was born in Nelson, but lived in Brierfield and his parents were well known in the area - his mother Robina was a teacher and his father, Colin, ran a thriving newsagents business.

Simon studied at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, before taking a degree in town planning at Leeds University.

In 1996 Simon suffered an attack of viral encephalitis and had to retire through ill health, as his memory was badly impaired.

Recently he had been a resident at Pathways North West, a rehabilitation unit in Accrington, and his wife Kathy would like to thank the team there for their skill and dedication.

Despite his severe illness, Simon had an active and happy life and will be much missed by his friends and was very well loved by his family.

He is survived by his wife Kathy, children Hazel and Daniel and his sister Heather Mullen, who lives with her husband and family in Cheshire.

The date of the funeral is yet to be announced.
