‘Star Wars’ event in memory of fan Simon (37)

CHARACTERS from Star Wars will descend on a Burnley bar in memory of a much-loved man who was a big fan of the hit films.

Friends of Simon Kennerley have organised a fund-raising evening in aid of Pendleside Hospice and have invited guests to come dressed in Star Wars or other sci-fi costumes.

Simon, of Holmestrand Avenue, died on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010, after being diagnosed with melanoma – discovered after a small freckle appeared on his face the previous year.

Despite being told the disease was terminal, just one day after his 37th birthday, he remained upbeat, incredibly telling his mum Maureen that it was better that it happened to him than somebody with a family.

Simon died just three hours after being moved to Pendleside Hospice.

His best friend, Vicki Sharp, has now organised a fancy dress fund-raising evening at Koko’s, Elizabeth Street, for July 7th, with tickets costing £5.

Star Wars re-enactors from the Mint Imperials will be there in full costume.

Vicki said: “Simon loved Star Wars and I thought what better way to remember him and make much-needed funds for Pendleside than to organise a themed night.

“I’ve asked Burnley band K-Billy to play, as the members were Simon’s friends. I also aim to arrange a silent auction and have received numerous donations including a signed football from the Clarets, a signed pennant from Manchester Utd, which was Simon’s favourite team, a piece of sci-fi wall art from Movie Art Prints.com and various Star Wars character prints signed by the actors themselves.”

There is a Facebook group called Simon’s Sci-fi Fancy Dress Night for more information.
