The education centre off the bypass – Barrowford Road, Higham – had been closed for the winter and after a lot of work making it bigger and better than the year before, opened to the public last Saturday.

Opening at 11am and closing at 4pm, the centre was packed with families all weekend, with children keen to stroke the new lambs, hold the chicks and new resident rabbit, and see the piglets.

Sarah Franco, weekend centre manager, said: “There was a fantastic turn-out for the first week and the children loved listening to farmer Geoff as he told them all about the animals and gave them the chance to stroke and handle them.

“Our whole ethos is based around sustainability and we want visitors young and old to understand the important role we, and our local suppliers, play in rearing our animals to get a good quality end product.

“While the children are having a great time, they are also learning a lot about the journey our meat makes from farm to plate, which is exactly what we are hoping to achieve.”

Now open every weekend until the end of September and extended hours during school holidays, there are a variety of events planned within the centre, which can be found at: www.roamingroosters.co.uk/education where pre-planned school visits can also be booked.
