Lee Miller, born in New York in 1907, was a top fashion model and then war photographer and correspondent for Vogue Magazine, as well as a gourmet cook, a friend of Picasso and the muse and lover of the surrealist photographer, Man Ray. The presentation embraced many different levels of the history of art and photography and gave a lasting and accurate account of a talented and courageous woman who was a free spirit and a trail blazer. It was made all the more poignant as Antony Penrose is not only her biographer, but also her son.

Lee Miller has been the subject of recent exhibitions at the National Gallery and the Imperial War Museum and Farley Farm in East Sussex, where she lived from 1947 and is now open to the public. Members were delighted to hear that Kate Winslet, who bears a striking resemblance, will play Lee Miller in a movie about Lee’s life and loves which is due for release in 2018.
