A Burnley man is gearing up to cycle the length of the country to raise money for the Stroke Association.
Simon Phillips (57) will cycle 960 miles from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’Groats in Scotland in aid of the Stroke Association, after his parents Geoff and Norma Phillips each had strokes within weeks of each other.
Simon will set off on his journey on August 28th, cycling around 80 miles a day and arriving in John O’ Groats on September 8th.
Simon said: “In 2017 my family and I were unlucky enough to find out how devastating a stroke can be, when both my parents had strokes within just five weeks of each other. Both their experiences are very different and have showed that a stroke doesn't affect any two people in the same way.
“Mum and dad have had to learn to deal with their different challenges in their own way, but luckily they both still have their individuality. Mum is very strong and knows what she wants and dad still cracks his jokes.
“Without charities like the Stroke Association, people that have been affected by stroke wouldn't have the support they need, so I wanted to do something to raise vital funds in my parents’ names. They were both keen cyclists when they were younger so this seemed a very fitting activity to do for them.
“My partner and coach Gillian Doolan has been a great support; she will be riding some of the way on the Preston to Carlisle leg on day five and bringing me fresh supplies. I’ve also been supported by Stockport Tri Club who I race for and I really appreciate it.”
Sian Thomas, regional fund-raiser at the Stroke Association, said: ‘For many stroke survivors, getting their life back on track after a stroke means overcoming life-changing disabilities and emotional trauma. But they can’t do this on their own.
"Every day people across the UK are regaining their independence with the support of the Stroke Association and others. We’re incredibly grateful to Simon for taking on this gruelling challenge to help raise funds for people affected by stroke.”
