Pendle Council’s Brierfield and Reedley Committee will discuss an application from Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd to demolish the box next to Brierfield railway station in order to carry out an upgrade to the level crossing which is next to it.

The applicants say the signal box is located in a position which would limit the functionality of the upgraded crossing and the building needs to be removed to allow the works to commence and work effectively.

The box went through a review with English Heritage in 2012 to assess its merits for listing and was not recommended for listing due to alterations to the building and its setting.

The box was built in 1876 and is located in the Brierfield Mills Conservation Area.

Councillors are recommended to delegate consent to planning officers for the demolition of the box.
