A rising star of the mixed martial arts world is kicking on to a bright future after winning gold in a Las Vegas contest.
Shoaib Yousaf (20) came out on top in the UFC MMA World Championships coming out on top in five bouts.
The former Pendle Vale College student, who lives in Nelson, described it as “one of the greatest moments” in his fledgling career.
Shoaib said: “First and foremost I was very pleased and honoured to have been selected to represent my country in the IMMAF World Championships in Las Vegas.
“To participate in such an event was a great experience but to go and win Gold at the World Championships was one of the greatest moments of my career.”
Shoaib, who trains at the Muscle Factory gym in Daneshouse, Burnley, underwent a gruelling schedule of preparation which included Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting.
He added: “Training for the tournament went great. I train all year round but coming up to the tournament was Ramadan so I therefore had to push myself and train harder in the months leading up to the world championships.”
Modest Shoaib also highlighted the contribution of his support team.
“A big part of my success is the team around me. I would like to thank my family and supporters for all their support. Another big thank you to my coaches Rob Sinclair and Mick Sinclair, Imran Khan and Zagir Kaziev, Uwais Majeed and Lucio Sergio.
“Also Carl Messen and all my team at Heavy Duty Fight Management aswell as UKMMAF for selecting me to represent UK at the IMMAF championships.
“I also want to thank my fast growing fan base. It motivates me when I’m training for a fight knowing I have such loyal fans willing me on.
“I’m looking forward to making my pro debut next and to show everybody that there is a lot more to come from me.”
