SABDEN: Tidy-up planned for best-kept village contest

Table TOP - The table top sale in St Mary’s Community Hall proved a big success, raising £404 for the hall refurbishment fund. People booked stalls selling a variety of new and used goods and there was a stream of visitors throughout the morning. There were bacon butties and refreshments on sale and an entrance raffle for a food hamper was won by Sue Hill, of Sabden. The fund has also received a donation of £300 from the family of the late Bert Bywater, a life-long resident of Sabden who died last month. The money was given in Bert’s memory by family, friends and neighbours. Donations and fund-raising efforts are still urgently needed for improvements already carried out on the community hall and to ensure the project continues. ELECTION - Sabden’s new representative on Ribble Valley Council is Conservative Mr Richard Newmark, who beat the Lib-Dem candidate Mr Andrew Berryman by 368 votes to 93. Mr Newmark is the son of the late Keith and Edna Newmark and has returned to his home village where he is a member of St Nicholas’s Church and serves on the Parochial Church Council and Sabden Parish Council. He worked for the family business, Newmark’s in Padiham and Burnley, for more than 30 years until it was sold in 2006. Now retired as a business advisor he is a board member of Pendle Homes community housing, a trustee of Pendle and Ribble Valley Homestart and a member of Padiham Rotary Club. Candidates who put their names forward to sit on Sabden Parish Council were elected unopposed. They are Michael Calvert, Tricia Cunliffe, Antony Haworth, Richard Newmark, Bernard Parfitt, Marion Procter and John Shorter. There are two vacancies. TRIP - There is to be a coach trip to Southport on Thursday, June 2nd, from Sabden and there are places available. The coach will leave the village at 9-30 a.m. and return from Southport at 4 p.m. It costs £12 and if you are interested in going, ring Laurie Wiseman on 01282 778800.

CRICKET - Sabden has opened its season in the Clitheroe and District Cricket League with a home win at its Whalley ground. Sabden, who are the reigning champions, hosted St James and soon knocked up 130 for 4 in their 15 overs with openers Richard Wright and Nick Burton both making 30 retired. St James made a spirited reply but after an early flourish the innings lost momentum and finished on 111 for 5 off 15 overs.

PRESENTATION - More than £2,100 raised by the outdoor music festival, Sabden Live, is to be presented to the North West Air Ambulance. The organisers, Kevan and Lisa Lingard and a small team of helpers, thank all the bands and soloists who gave their services free and all who helped on the day. Special thanks go to the sponsors of the event, The Pendle Witch, Martin O’Toole Electrical Contractor, Rock Artist Management (Clitheroe), Sabden Motor Bodies, Brookside Garage, Village News, Jim Fort Haulage, Balmbra Cleaning & Caring Services, P.L. Tiling and Ribble Valley Carriage Co. and Shane Williams, general manager of Holdsworth House Hotel, who lives in the village and donated some wonderful prizes for the raffle. Some raffle prizes are still unclaimed and the numbers are on display in the Pendle Witch pub, which hosted the event.

BOWLING - The draw has been made for Sabden Bowling Club’s third annual Peter Lambert Charity Doubles in aid of Pendleside Hospice. ST MARY’S - The 11 a.m. Sunday Mass at St Mary’s RC Church is to remain the same, following a discusssion at a meeting of the parish forum at St Michael and St John’s parish hall in Clitheroe. There had been some concern that numbers at the Clitheroe church, now part of the parish of Our Lady of the Valley with Sabden, were suffering since its Mass had been moved to the earlier time of 9-30 a.m. to allow parish priest Mgr Corcoran to get over to Sabden to say Mass. However, no satisfactory alternative times could be found to suit both parishes so the statuq quo will remain. The £20 bonus ball winners at St Mary’s have been Pauline Hindle, Philip Clarkson and Peter and Susan White. There is to be a meeting on Wednesday, May 25th, at 7-30 p.m. in the hall to discuss the summer garden party and nominating two representatives to sit on the church parish finance committee. Important events coming up in the church calendar are confirmation on Sunday, May 22nd, and first Holy Communion on Sunday, June 19th.

CHRISTIAN AID - People are asked to support Christian Aid this year by putting money in the envelopes delivered with the Good News for Sabden magazine and return them to either of the village churches or to 31 Pendleside Close, 58 Padiham Road, or 4 St Nicholas’s Avenue.

MEETING - Sabden’s annual ratepayers’ meeting was very poorly attended by members of the public – only three were in attendance to hear the report of the council’s year. It was led by Coun. Antony Haworth who gave his chairman’s report. During the year Coun. Kath Marks had resigned and two new councillors were welcomed – Coun. Ricky Newmark and Coun. Frank Goss – who only sat for a short time and had now stood down. Coun. Marion Procter had served for 40 years, on and off, and the clerk Mrs Angela Whitwell had completed 20 years’ service for which she was thanked along with all the councillors for their work. The council had considered 14 planning applications during the year including some that had caused concern among residents, in particular for eight affordable homes on the “wetlands” off Whalley Road near the Whins. Although the parish council had made strong representation on behalf of the village the plans were passed.

Current re-submitted plans for new homes at Victoria Mill are on a brownfield site which is ready for development and were the subject of a public meeting last month. Plans have been passed for the Cobden Mill site for more homes and, although this has the apearance of being reasonably sympathetic to the village, coupled with plans for more houses at Victoria Mill, Stubbins Lane and off Whalley Road, means a very large influx of building to be carried out in the village over the next few years.

The village lengthsman scheme appeared to have survived a threat of cancellation due to cutbacks, and is to continue for the time being. Sabden has been entered in the Lancashire Best-Kept Village competition this year and the council hopes residents will give it the necessary support and respect the environment in which they live.

Regarding highway matters he said work had been carried out at Bull Bridge, but was far less than the promised footbridge and the new footpath is actually what was turned down four years ago as not being suitable. There is outstanding work including street markings, and it is intended to resurface Whalley Road from the centre to Watt Street this summer. A Village Action Plan being undertaken by Coun. Michael Calvert is an attempt to bring facets of village life together and the council looks forward to its progress.

The annual accounts of Sabden Parish Council were considered and approved. A slight overspend would go forward to the next financial year. The main costs incurred during the year were the clerk’s salary of £3,821 and expenses of £504; insurance of £1,046, £3,000 towards the lengthsman scheme for which the village gets more than £8,000 worth of work; £1,854 for grass mowing; £1,655 for playground maintenance and repairs, largely due to the zipline having to be repaired at a cost of more than £800 after it was broken by an adult; £2,096 for general maintenance and repairs; £1,141 for the SPID, speed indicator device (for batteries and for it to be intermittently moved from Clitheroe Road to Whalley Road); £981 for rents; £846 for plants – which was a one-off large sum due to new planters being provided in Whalley Road and Padiham Road and the new “Sabden” sign in flowers along the grass on Whalley Road; plus £864 for the planting and maintenance of beds and pots. Councillors said they would be looking at the council’s finances very closely next year and making savings wherever possible.

CLEAN UP - Sabden is to hold a clean-up day on Saturday, May 28th, from 10 a.m. starting at the village car park, before judging begins for the Best-Kept Village Competition. Some parish councillors carried out a clean-up of the brook and will continue over the next few weeks picking up rubbish etc and they hope the public will join them for a final sweep of the village on May 28th. People are asked to keep their own gardens and areas around their homes tidy as well as helping elderly or disabled neighbours who may not be able to do so.
