SABDEN NEWS: More houses planned for Sabden?

HOUSING – There is an important meeting in St Mary’s Community Hall tomorrow to look at plans for the proposed housing development on the Marbill site in Watt Street and Whalley Road. From 9 a.m. to noon the developers, Bowsall (Sabden) Ltd, will be available to answer any questions relating to the plans, which will be on display. The developers have kept Sabden Parish Council “in the loop” from the outset about their proposals, but councillors, on behalf of residents who have voiced their opposition to the proposal for so many homes in the village, have serious reservations that the current plan shows an increase in dwellings from 53 to 70. The increase is taken up by not proceeding with the proposed dedicated mill premises for the Marbill company, which is moving to Simonstone and adding more houses on that part of the site. The mill offices will be returned to three riverside cottages and English heritage has decreed that the mill chimney has to stay. The old spinning mill on Whalley Road will be turned into flats.

This is the latest housing development planned for Sabden in addition to the old Cobden Mill site which has had outline planning for 40+ houses passed, plans for five houses on the old printworks on Stubbins Lane, and eight houses for which plans are passed on Whalley Road facing the Whins. Many residents and the parish council feel there are too many dwellings being built in Sabden and that the infrastructure, schools, utilities etc cannot cope, on top of the major increase in traffic.

BOWLING – Sabden Bowling Club kicks off the season tomorrow, weather permitting, after the President’s Coffee Morning in the pavilion from 10 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome to the coffee morning and any new members will be very welcome. Existing members are urged to attend and pay their annual subscription. The club will be holding its annual open doubles competitions again this year starting with the Peter Lambert Open Doubles competition to be held on May 21st and 22nd. Pendleside Hospice will again be the beneficiaries in the popular competition which is restricted to 32 pairs. Later in the season, Derian House Children’s Hospice will have its coffers boosted when the club hosts the Alan and Anita Whalley open doubles on August 13th and 14th and is also restricted to 32 pairs. PARKING – Sabden Primary School wishes to remind parents and motorists not to park in the bus bay opposite the school in Whalley Road or on the zigzag lines, especially at school dropping off and collection times, as it is potentially putting their children in danger. There is so much congestion in the area, being the centre of the village, that the school and local police are concerned for the safety of children crossing the busy road.

EASTER – Pupils at Sabden Primary School are getting cracking with their annual Easter Egg competition. Their Easter egg models will be accepted into school from next Monday to Thursday when the judging will take place.

WASTE PAPER – Next Tuesday is waste paper collection around Sabden when waste paper should be left outside in the white hessian sacks provided.

SABDEN LIVE – Sabden Live is back for a second year - on Sunday, May 1st, on the car park behind the Pendle Witch pub. Last year’s first event attracted a line up of bands for the open air event and was a huge success.

SERVICES – Sabden churches this weekend have the following services: St Nicholas’s CE Church has a 9-30 a.m. Holy Communion with the Rev. Jim Holt. Sabden Baptist Church has a 10 a.m. service led by Alan Williamson and at St Mary’s RC Church there is Sunday Mass at 11 a.m. with Mgr John Corcoran.

COUNCIL - Sabden Parish Council will meet on Tuesday, April 5th, at 7-30 p.m. in the top room at St Nicholas’s Church Hall, Wesley Street. The public are welcome and there is an opportunity at the beginning of the meeting to raise any issues.

CIRCLE – Sabden Ladies’ Circle will meet on Wednesday at 7-30 p.m. in St Nicholas’s church institute. All women are welcome.

TABLE TOP – Tables are going well for the table top sale in St Mary’s Community Hall on Saturday, May 7th. Tables are £7 or £10 and admission for buyers is £1 including a free raffle ticket for a bumper food hamper. Stalls can be set up from 9 a.m. on the day and the event will run from 10 a.m. to noon.
