Sabden mum’s aid for Liverpool Women’s Hospital after miscarriage heartache

When Lisa Korol decided to try for a second child she did not realise it would take her six years, two late miscarriages and surgery.

Now she is proud mum to Lucja (6) and eight-month-old Tahlia and credits Liverpool Women’s Hospital with giving her a chance at becoming a mum again.

Lisa (34), who lives in Sabden, recently held a coffee morning where she raised more than £1,000 for the hospital’s miscarriage clinic.

“It’s been a really horrific last few years. I had the first miscarriage in December 2009. I’d been for my 20-week scan, everything was fine and we were looking forward to buying new things for the baby, but I went into early labour.”

A few months later, in August 2010, Lisa suffered a second miscarriage while on holiday in Malta.

“The doctors said it was one of those things, but me and my husband were absolutely devastated.” The couple sought a second opinion and Lisa was referred to the hospital in Liverpool. Tests found she had an incompetent cervix which means it could not support the weight of the baby and she underwent pioneering surgery to fix the problem. The hospital also found she had two blood conditions, which could also be dangerous during pregnancy, and treated those.

In September last year Lisa gave birth to Tahlia four weeks early at Burnley General Hospital.

After celebrating the birth of their second daughter, Lisa and her husband decided they wanted to give something back to the hospital and set about planning the fund-raiser, at St Mary’s Church hall.

The event included 25 stalls selling everything from shabby chic homeware to jewellery, coffee and cake and a raffle and was busy all day.

“It was a fantastic day,” added Lisa. “I was going to have the fund-raiser at home, but I realised I knew too many people. A lot of women have suffered miscarriages.

“The care they offer at Liverpool Women’s Hospital is outstanding, but a lot of people in this area don’t know about it at all.

“Now I’ve got an eight-month-old baby. She’s here, she’s healthy and that’s all because of Liverpool Women’s Hospital.”
