The offenders kicked the victim in the ribs as he lay on the ground and pulled his jacket from him to steal his mobile phone and money.

The man received treatment at the Royal Blackburn Hospital for broken ribs, a black eye and cuts, scrapes and bruises.

DC Sarah Beckley from Burnley Police said: “This is a nasty and unprovoked robbery and I would appeal to anybody that witnessed the offence or with any information to contact police.

“We believe there were up to two offenders involved and prior to the incident the victim had been at the local bookmakers and won over £200 so it is possible the offenders have seen him with this money and followed him.”

Anyone with any information should call Burnley CID Dc 3525 Jon Penson or Dc 3000 Sarah Beckley on 01282 472017 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
