REVIEW: ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ at Colne Muni

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, is Snow White the fairest pantomime of them all?

Well I for one wasn’t disappointed. I hadn’t been to a pantomime for almost 15 years and wasn’t sure what to expect.

Everybody knows the story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” but George Critchley, returning to Colne Muni for the 16th consecutive year, has written, produced and directed an enjoyable, refreshing and downright funny pantomime.

The jokes came thick and fast from the moment the curtain was raised and Lauren Atkins, playing the lead role, gave a strong performance alongside the equally impressive Keith Henderson as the dapper Prince Fernando.

Amy Skillman commanded the stage performing as Queen Cruella in a highly energetic and demanding role which required plenty of vocal variation while Chris Quinten, formerly Brian Tilsley in “Coronation Street”, was superb in the role of the Queen’s snivelling henchman Ramsbottom.

And then there was Mrs Duddles with her dopey son Muddles. The comedy duo, played by Keith De’Winter and George Critchley, provided laughs throughout.

In addition to this was pantomime narrator Ceris Hine as Fairy Good who brought a touch of glitz to the stage, but the show wouldn’t have been complete without the contribution from members of the East Lancs School of Dance who were marvellous and showed no signs of stage fright.

Naturally, there was the odd slip-up and unexpected moment, but after all, it was the first night and they only added to the side-splitting laughter anyway!

There’s clearly a great camaraderie between cast members and the fact they all love the roles they are playing really shines through as they wowed the audience over the course of 16 scenes.

So if you fancy an entertaining show full of cracking costumes, dazzling dance and sensational singing, make sure you see “Snow White” while you can.

The pantomime runs at Colne Muni until Sunday, January 22nd, so if you have children, treat them to tremendous offering, and if you don’t, release the big kid inside you and go and see it for yourself.
