A spokesman for Scentsicles, which carried out the research, said: "When you think about the most powerful smells of Christmas - from mince pies to mulled wine - having these smells in the air will act as powerful triggers of the festive season, conjuring up happy memories of past Christmas times, and especially childhood, which is why they can feel safe and warm but also happy and exciting.

"Whilst sight, sound and taste can also trigger memories, smell memories are the most evocative of particular people, places and things often attached to a particular episode in our lives."
