Rare image of Young Kitchener

Mr Douglas Cooper found the pictures among old family photographs including pictures of Jennie Jackson, a young girl who was celebrated for her money-raising campaigns, not only in Burnley but nationally.

“Young Kitchener”, as Jennie was known, raised £4,000 for the purchase of comforts for troops, and a motor ambulance which she presented to Queen Alexandra.

The photographs have now been donated to Towneley Hall, where they will be included in exhibitions to run later this year.

Mike Townend, the curator at Towneley Hall, said: “Donations like this are really valuable. The First World War had a big impact on Burnley, and images and artefacts from the time really help bring the issues to life.

“We’d like to hear from anyone with photographs, diaries, letters or stories of their family members who fought in the war or lived through it in Burnley. People can keep their artefacts – we’d just like the chance to see them, and perhaps copy or borrow items.

“Our big project to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war will include a book of 100 stories as well as exhibitions.”
