£94,000 refurbishment for Harle Syke pub

A HARLE Syke pub has been given a new lease of life after a generous cash injection from the brewery.

Punch Taverns has spent nearly £94,000 refurbishing the Craven Heifer and licensee Brian Parker said it made a nice change from all the doom and gloom currently surrounding the pub industry.

“When we took it over in October the brewery said they’d give us six months to see how it went and then they might come in a spend some money on it,” he said. “It hasn’t had any work done on it for a good seven years so it was definitely in need. They’ve put in a new brand new kitchen upstairs so we can do food at the weekends, revamped the bar, put in new carpets and furniture and done all the signage outside. It’s looking really good.”

Mr Parker believes this show of faith by the brewery demonstrates the importance of a thriving pub scene in the village. “They are having to close 3,200 of the 6,000 pubs they have so for them to spend this money on the Craven shows they are treating it as a flagship one. It’s important for the village that the pubs stay open and that people have variety. Hopefully it can go from strength to strength now.”

l The Craven Heifer’s grand opening takes place tonight with Columbia scheduled to play and a collection for the Pendleside Hospice also taking place.
